Gillian Norton-Byce: Accounts Payable Clerk

My name is Gillian Norton-Byce and I’m an Accounts Payable Clerk for Northwood.

When I came to Northwood in January 1995, I had intentions of staying for only a short time. I was originally hired as a receptionist at both the Manor and Centre Desks, working the evening shift. Back then, the Manor Desk also answered any incoming emergency calls from Intouch clients. However, during my year in that position, I think I may have answered less than five.

I next went to work as a receptionist in Homecare; when their office was located on the main floor of the Towers. This was followed by a six-month term in payroll, then back to Homecare reception. When an opening came up in financial services, I jumped at it and spent the next ten years processing time sheets for home support workers. A little over three years ago, I moved into accounts payable and am essentially responsible for paying the bills for Northwood.

I have a great boss who helps make my work life wonderful! At times, I miss the interaction I once had with residents, but I’m very happy where I’m at. I really like all the people I work with and of course, I love Northwood. We have so many great benefits and are treated so well.

Seven years ago, I met my husband Neil at the gym, while training to become an RCMP officer. Neil works as a Mechanical Manager at the Halifax Shipyards and we’ve been married for over two years. We spend a lot of time together and enjoy vacationing in the Caribbean. We’ve been all over Cuba and several other destinations over the last number of years.

My son Ryan is the best thing I ever did. For a very long time, it was just me and him. We’re very close and I’m so happy for that. He is a wonderful son, and caring and loving dad and husband to his wonderful family. I’m also fortunate to have a great daughter-in-law, Amanda and two beautiful grandsons, Landon and Kayson. Whenever I’m able, I spend as much time as I can with them, including taking Landon to hockey on Thursdays.
